An introduction to Traumatophilia: Race, Trauma, Transformation
, In person, The Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis
Avgi Saketopoulou presses on a belief psychoanalysis rarely examines: that trauma is only ever damage to be removed. Against this traumatophobic picture she sets traumatophilia, the idea that returning to the site of the traumatic can put its stalled energies back into circulation. Taking the fraught case of racial fetish as her example, and drawing on queer of colour critique, Black feminisms and Laplanche, she asks what a traumatised subject might make of their trauma.
