The Yes Brain

How to Cultivate Courage, Curiosity, and Resilience in Your Child

Daniel Siegel, Tina Payne BrysonFirst published 2018English

Helps parents foster a receptive state of courage, curiosity and resilience.

This unique and exciting book shows us how to help children embrace life with all of its challenges and thrive in the modern world.
Carol S. Dweck, Stanford University, author of Mindset

Siegel and Bryson set out a working distinction between two neural states: a reactive condition, which they call the No Brain, where a child becomes rigid, defensive and closed, and a receptive condition, the Yes Brain, in which the same child can stay flexible, curious and open to what a moment asks of them. The book treats these not as fixed traits but as states a caregiver's responses can shift, and it maps four qualities the authors group under receptivity: balance, resilience, insight and empathy.

Written for parents by the authors of The Whole-Brain Child, it translates interpersonal neurobiology into household scenes and scripted exchanges. For a clinician, the value lies less in the parenting technique than in its plain account of how a regulating relationship widens a child's window of tolerance. Bantam published it in 2018.
