The Social Neuroscience of Education

Optimizing Attachment and Learning in the Classroom

Louis CozolinoFirst published 2013English

Applies attachment and brain science to the classroom.

No one has made interpersonal neurobiology more relevant to education.
Andrew N. Meltzoff, Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences, University of Washington

Cozolino sets learning inside the framework of interpersonal neurobiology, treating the brain as an organ shaped by relationships rather than an isolated processor of information. Across the book he reads the classroom as an attachment system: the bond between teacher and student regulates arousal, and the same limbic circuitry that governs safety and threat in early caregiving governs whether new material can be taken in at all. He gathers research on stress, memory, and social engagement to argue that fear narrows attention and shuts down the capacity to learn, while a reliable relational base widens it.

For a clinician, the material sits close to home. The mechanisms Cozolino describes, secure base, affect regulation, learning under threat, are the ones at work in the consulting room, and his account of how relationship builds the brain gives a neurobiological vocabulary for what containment achieves. Norton published it in 2013 within its social neuroscience of education series.
