The Pocket Guide to Neuroscience for Clinicians

Louis CozolinoFirst published 2020English

A concise clinician reference distilling the brain science most relevant to practice.

Cozolino organises current brain science into short, self-contained entries that a clinician can consult between sessions rather than read cover to cover. The book moves through the social brain, the developing brain, the executive systems, consciousness, memory, trauma, and attachment, pairing each topic with case vignettes, labelled diagrams, and a glossary of terms and named figures. It sits in Norton's Interpersonal Neurobiology series, and it assumes the reader treats patients rather than runs experiments.

The through-line is developmental and relational: genes express through experience, early attachment shapes the circuits that later carry affect regulation and defence, and the therapeutic relationship remains one of the few settings in which those circuits can be revised. For a psychodynamic reader, the value is a compact vocabulary for what containment and working through might be doing at the level of neural systems, without asking the clinician to abandon the consulting-room frame. Published in 2020, it functions as a desk reference, not a treatment manual.
