Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual, PDM-2

Vittorio Lingiardi, Nancy McWilliamsFirst published 2017English

A diagnostic framework built on personality, mental functioning and subjective experience, offered as a counterpart to the DSM.

Edited by Vittorio Lingiardi and Nancy McWilliams, PDM-2 sets out a taxonomy that reads a patient along three coordinated dimensions: the level and type of personality organization, a graded profile of mental functioning that rates capacities such as regulation, reflection, and defensive operation, and the symptom patterns as the patient actually lives them from the inside. The manual runs this scheme separately for infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and later life, so the same person is described differently at each stage of development.

The orientation is toward formulation rather than labelling. Each section pairs conceptual description with worked case material, and the companion website supplies reproducible rating scales that carry the axes into session notes and review. First published in 2006, the second edition arrived in 2017 with more than ninety percent of the text rewritten by an international group of contributors.
