Mind Over Mood
The client-facing CBT workbook, and the one most often handed across the room.
True to its title, this book really can help you transform your thinking so you can make lasting changes.
Mind Over Mood is a client-facing CBT workbook that walks a person through identifying automatic thoughts, testing them against evidence, and building more accurate and helpful alternatives. Greenberger and Padesky structure the work around the seven-column Thought Record, then extend it into action plans, behavioural experiments, and skills for depression, anxiety, anger, guilt, and shame. The argument is direct: moods, physical reactions, and behaviour follow from how a situation is interpreted, and a person who learns to examine and revise those interpretations gains a durable way to shift how they feel.
For a clinician, the book gives structure that travels home between sessions. Each worksheet is reproducible, and the chapters can be assigned in sequence or matched to a presenting mood, so a client keeps practising the method rather than the therapist's presence.
The second edition added chapters on setting goals and maintaining progress, material on mindfulness, acceptance, and forgiveness, and twenty-five new worksheets.
