Healing Trauma

Attachment, Mind, Body and Brain

Daniel Siegel, Marion SolomonFirst published 2003English

An edited clinical volume linking attachment, trauma and the brain.

Edited by Daniel J. Siegel and Marion F. Solomon, this volume gathers researchers, clinicians, and theorists working at the meeting point of neurobiology, developmental psychology, traumatology, and systems theory. First published in 2003 within Norton's Interpersonal Neurobiology series, it grew out of a convergence of ideas among clinicians and researchers shaping how the field understands relational injury and repair.

The contributors argue that early relationships shape the developing nervous system, that unresolved traumatic experience settles into patterns of rigidity or disorganisation, and that these patterns remain open to change through later relationships, including the therapeutic one. Chapters move between research on memory, affect regulation, and the body and the clinical encounter itself.

For the practitioner, the collection connects mechanism to method: it reads bodily and emotional states as clinical information, frames integration as the aim of treatment, and positions the therapeutic relationship as the setting where change becomes possible.
