A General Selection from the Works of Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud, John RickmanFirst published 1937English

The classic pre-war one-volume Freud selection, co-published by the Institute of Psycho-Analysis.

John Rickman assembled this one-volume Freud for the Institute of Psycho-Analysis, issuing it in 1937 as the first of the Psycho-Analytical Epitomes. Across some three hundred pages he brings together Freud's shorter theoretical and clinical papers, among them the work on narcissism, the study of mourning and melancholia, the account of group psychology, and the essay on the ego and the id.

Rickman sets the selection behind a brief editorial framing and closes it with an index and a glossary, defining the vocabulary that Freud's English translators had only lately fixed. Theory and case-facing writing sit side by side, so the metapsychology can be read next to the papers where it bears on symptom, mood, and the life of groups.

For a clinician now, the volume preserves the pre-Standard-Edition translations in which several of these papers first reached English readers, held in the compact canon that a mid-century analytic training treated as its common ground.

Sigmund Freud (1856 to 1939) was an Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis. Born in Freiberg, Moravia, he moved to Vienna in 1860 and worked there for most of his life, training as a physician and developing psychoanalysis as both a theory of mind and a method of treatment. His works included The Interpretation of Dreams (1900), Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905), and Civilisation and its Discontents (1931). After Nazi forces took control of Austria in 1938, he emigrated to London, where he died in 1939.
